TOPIC: Employee Free Choice Act and the Obama Labor Agenda
SPEAKER: Richard I. Lehr
BIO Summary: Richard Lehr is a founding partner of the labor and employment law firm of Lehr Middlebrooks & Vreeland, P.C., and has practiced employment law for more than twenty-eight years. Upon graduation from law school, Richard joined a large general practice firm that had not yet established a labor and employment law practice. He spent fourteen years with that firm, and was instrumental in developing a labor and employment law practice, which ultimately represented clients on a national scale before founding LMV. He has been accorded the “Super Lawyer” status by a peer rating service. Only five percent of all practitioners receive this honor.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Mobile SHRM Members,
Happy New Year! Have you made your list of goals and resolutions for 2009? I’d like to share one of my goals with you: I want each of you to find merit and benefit from your membership in Mobile SHRM this year. I believe our chapter leadership will do all they can to make sure this happens for you. Some of it will be up to you, though. In order to derive the most from your affiliation with our chapter I hope you’ll try to:
Be present at our monthly meetings
Our chapter is a wonderful professional network. Priceless, if you ask me.
Be engaged as a participant
Your involvement enriches your experience.
Be available to others
You bring more to the group than you may think.
For 2009, Heron Lakes has increased the cost of lunch to $14.95 per person. If you do the math you can see that our lunch fee of $10 doesn’t quite pay for your meal. With the economy as it is right now, the board has decided not to raise the lunch fee at this time, but we must get creative in supplementing the difference. You’ll hear more about the plan for this in the near future. For right now, you can do your part to help by remembering to RSVP. Since the country club requires us to provide a headcount for lunch, your RSVP ensures we get the count as close as possible.
For the time being, Billy Boswell will take a leave of absence as the keeper of our RSVP list for the monthly meetings. (Thank you, Billy, for your help with this in the past!) Beginning this month, if you plan to attend the meeting, please send your RSVP to our Secretary, Cindy Giddens. Her email link is on the first page of the newsletter.

RICHARD LEHR
Richard Lehr is a founding partner of the labor and employment law firm of Lehr Middlebrooks & Vreeland, P.C., and has practiced employment law for more than twenty-eight years. Upon graduation from law school, Richard joined a large general practice firm that had not yet established a labor and employment law practice. He spent fourteen years with that firm, and was instrumental in developing a labor and employment law practice, which ultimately represented clients on a national scale before founding LMV. He has been accorded the “Super Lawyer” status by a peer rating service. Only five percent of all practitioners receive this honor.
Richard's practice ranges geographically from the north slope of Alaska to south Florida, covering the full range of American industries and employment relations issues. His practice model is premised on a creative and aggressive approach to assisting his clients to fulfill their business objectives, with an emphasis on what the employer can do, not what the employer cannot do. In addition to representing clients in matters involving representation campaigns and collective bargaining, Richard's traditional labor practice has included the largest union decertification in one region of the NLRB, as well as planning the integration of the union and non-union work forces for two multi-national merger partners. He counsels with employers regarding developing and implementing workforce change strategies, without provoking litigation or union organizing.
Richard is the author, editor and co-editor of several books and articles regarding labor and employment relations issues. He is the past management co-chair of the American Bar Association's Regional Liaison to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and past management chair of the ERISA Litigation subcommittee of the American Bar Association Individual Employment Rights Section. Richard is the Vice Chair of the Manufacture Alabama Workforce Development Committee and is Chair of the Workforce Development Subcommittee of the Governor’s Commission on Manufacturing Economic STIMULUS and Free & Fair Trade. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Worklaw Network and the author of several books and articles regarding employment issues. Richard has been a featured speaker to business groups and trade associations throughout the country. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Industrial Health Council and provides pro bono assistance to several charitable and religious organizations.
Deadline is Here for Winter 2009 PHR-SPHR Certification
Ready to earn your PHR/SPHR certification? Sign up for now for Mobile SHRM’s winter 2009 certification preparation course! Classes begin on January 26 and will meet on Monday evenings from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. The final class meeting will be May 4, and there will be no class on February 23 or April 13. The course will be held at Mobile Technical Institute (MTI), which is located at 3013 Airport Blvd., Suite 400.
The cost for each participant is $835 (cash or check), which includes the complete SHRM Learning System. Individual purchase of the SHRM Learning System alone would cost you $595 TO $695. Classes will be taught by Mary White, M.A., SPHR. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion for the training course, suitable for framing!
As an added bonus, all members of Mobile SHRM who successfully complete this preparation course and successfully pass the exam during the spring 2009 or winter 2009/2010 testing window will receive reimbursement for their PHR/SPHR exam at the national SHRM member rate.

Today's students are tomorrow's workforce. In order to meet the needs of both existing and new industry, the workforce must meet rigorous and relevant standards and be recruited from all sources, but especially from local high school graduates. On February 3, 2009, the Mobile Graduates: Drop-out Prevention Summit will be held at the Arthur Outlaw Convention Center. Come learn first hand of the collaborative efforts of Mayor Sam Jones, City of Mobile, Carolyn Akers, Executive Director, Mobile Area Education Foundation and Dr. Roy Nichols, Superintendent of Mobile County Public Schools, to design and implement aggressive strategies to decrease the drop-out rate, increase the rigor of course offerings and reform secondary schools system wide. These initiatives are being led by the Research Alliance for Multiple Pathways (RAMP) for Mobile's Youth Taskforce and in partnership with national experts. We invite you to join us as we share, connect and commit ourselves to the goal of "Fulfilling the Graduation Promise".

As we come to the end of 2008, I’d like to take a moment to thank the Board for their volunteer
efforts this year. In this economy, to have an organization that has maintained such steady growth as
we have seen is commendable. Our chapter membership deserves kudos as well, but my hat goes off
to the members of our Board. They are truly dedicated to their profession, as well as to our chapter.
