President's Letter

hands joiningNow that we’re into the second half of 2016, it’s time to start putting succession plans in place for the 2017 chapter leadership team! If you are interested in engaging with Mobile SHRM as part of the leadership team or if you just want to learn more about what’s involved, please let me know.

Becoming part of the chapter’s leadership team is a very rewarding experience that will help you strengthen your network, develop new skills and help shape the chapter’s direction. There are opportunities to participate as a member of the Board of Directors, in a Core Leadership role or as a Coordinator.

Positions will be slated over the next few months for fall elections and January induction. Interested? Please contact me at president@mobileshrm.org.

Regards,

Mary White, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

SHRM-CP/SCP Certification Prep Class

We are planning to hold a SHRM-CP/SCP certification prep class in 2017. As in past years, classes will start in mid-January and meet for 13 Monday evenings at MTI Business Solutions’ training center, with breaks for Mardi Gras and Mobile & Baldwin County spring break weeks.

Pricing is not yet available, as we are waiting for verification from SHRM on the cost for the 2017 learning system. As soon as SHRM confirms that information, we will finalize details and open registration. If you would like to be placed on a list to be notified when registration opens, please email your request to class instructor Mary White at mgwhite@mtimail.com.

Governmental Affairs

Paid Parental Leave Status
Legislative discussions continue to churn opinions on Paid Parental Leave.

Earlier this year, President Obama signed a memorandum that will allow federal workers 6 weeks of paid leave, and New York's mayor followed suit for city employees. It is important to note that California, New Jersey, and Rhode Island offer paid family leave as well. Although this bonding time will certainly strengthen familial bonds, employers will be faced with the unintended consequences created by staffing challenges compounded with funding the paid leave.

It is uncertain as to if, or when, this benefit will expand to Alabama. However, as HR leaders, we can strengthen our partnership and value to our organizations by socializing topics such as this that keep leaders aware and informed of the ever-changing HR climate.

Book Drive

bookThe 1,000 books in 100 days workforce readiness initiative is drawing to a close! This program has been incredibly successful – it looks like we’ll end up with more than 5,000 books statewide. What a great way for SHRM chapter members to make a huge impact on workforce readiness in the local community!

Books will continue to be accepted through the August chapter meeting! Please bring your contributions to the August 12 chapter meeting, drop them off at AIM Mail Center (6300 Grelot Road) or contact Carol Statter (past-president@mobileshrm.org) to make other arrangements.

Contact Nichelle Evans (workforce@mobileshrm.org) or Carol Statter (past-president@mobileshrm.org) to arrange to have them picked up.
