Today
is day 77 since the oil disaster began………
Over 19 times the amount of oil that was released
from the infamous Valdez has now erupted, sorry
but it no longer technically qualifies as a
spill, into our Gulf of Mexico, our very own
backyard. |
Most importantly,
to quote our President “plug the damn hole”!
Until then, it will be very difficult for us to focus
on a real recovery process, because the damage is
continuing daily. In many respects this constant
state of uncertainty has taken a toll on our previous “peace
of mind”, which is something even money cannot
replace.
Albeit slow and late by all accounts, some positive
things are now starting to come together: pelicans
are being saved and released, money has been set
aside to assist payment of losses, locals are now
actively leading and participating in the cleanup
plans, and most importantly our hometown hero Jimmy
Buffett will be doing a FREE beachfront concert in
Gulf Shores, with Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown and Alan
Touisaint. All 35,000 tickets are gone, but, thankfully,
the concert will be carried nationwide on CMT!!!
Mark your schedule----you do not want to miss our
MSHRM BREAKFAST meeting this Friday!!! Casi Callaway
the award winning Executive Director of Mobile Baykeepers
will be the speaker and will definitely have a lot
to say. She has been in the media a lot recently
and has been a valuable gatekeeper for our local
environment in this crisis and is intimately knowledgeable
concerning our catastrophe. Be there to show support
for her and her efforts.
I sincerely hope that you
and your family have a fun and safe 4th of July
weekend in spite of the “oil
crisis”. This very significant holiday is time
to stop, celebrate and reflect on what a wonderful
country we have and the very real privilege it is
to live here. We need, heck no, we deserve, to take
a short break from all the recent events.

PS----Personal thanks for the fantastic feedback on
the survey that all of you have provided to help add
value to MSHRM membership--VAM!! Stay tuned for some
exciting news soon in response to your suggestions,
ideas and comments. Keep them coming-----I promise
we listen!!
Sidenote: Those
of you attended our last few MSHRM meetings may have
noticed that I completed the pre-lunch blessing much
faster than in the past. The primary reason is that
I do not want the fried chicken to get cold and I
know HR people are hungry at that time of day and
ready to eat. A secondary reason is that, as it has
been brought to my attention, we need to be sensitive
to the faiths and beliefs of all of our members,
which is an important standard for HR. I personally
surveyed all the other chapters in the State. We are
only one of two in the entire State of Alabama that
actually say a blessing at their meeting. Most of the
other chapters and the State Council as well as SHRM
National utilize a moment of silence. Your survey responses
to the issue have been overwhelming that you wish to
keep the blessing. To honor our members’ wishes
and to respect all our members’ beliefs at the
same time, the short non-denominational blessing I
say is the closest way to accomplish those goals without
reverting to a moment of silence. There you have it,
politically correct and hot fried chicken----a win-win
situation!! I just felt you should know....................
