New Mobile SHRM Website Coming Soon!

Over the years, some of you may have experienced problems navigating the Mobile SHRM website or registering for an event.  Many of those problems have been caused by our need to utilize three different sites to obtain our desired results – providing member information, maintaining our member database, event registration and credit card processing.  We sought professional help to solve these problems and the results will be a new website by August 1st! 

One of the major changes should streamline our luncheon RSVP process and event registration.  Since the site will now host our membership database, event registration and credit card payments will populate the appropriate cost for members and non-members.  While these changes will benefit our members, individuals who are not members will automatically be required to register and pay as non-members.  Most of you are thinking “I am a member, so this sounds fine to me.”  Unfortunately, that may not be the case.

Often, we have individuals register and pay for events as members who are not active members.  Many believe they are still in good standing because their company has paid their dues in the past.  Because membership in Mobile SHRM is an individual membership, the dues notifications are sent to the member.  Companies are not billed unless the organization receives a request to do so.  When the membership is not paid within the appropriate time frame, the status is changed to non-member.

With the planned changes to our website, individuals who are not active members will automatically be directed to the non-member charge when registering for Mobile SHRM events.  If you would like to check your membership status, please contact Carol Statter by email at membership@mobileshrm.org.  Carol will also be available at our monthly meetings to check membership status.


Mobile SHRM is grateful to Heron Lakes for allowing us to hold our monthly meetings in their facility and their flexibility in working with us to accommodate individuals who do not RSVP for lunch.  Many of our members may not realize that the cost of lunch per person exceeds what we charge our members and guests.  Through our monthly sponsorships, we have been able to offset some of the additional expense.  However, in an effort to cover some of the remaining expense without affecting our membership, the Board has voted to increase the price of non-member lunches to $20.  This change will go into effect at our September meeting.  

If you have been attending our meetings as a guest, you will continue to be welcomed.  If you have been attending as a guest and wish to apply for membership to Mobile SHRM, please visit our website at www.mobileshrm.org and submit a membership application.  The application can be found on the left side of the page under the “Welcome” heading.  Membership applications are voted on at the monthly Mobile SHRM Board meetings.

HR Foundation

REMINDER:  DEADLINE APPROACHING  - Application deadline July 15, 2013
One hundred scholarships totaling$100,000 will be awarded to SHRM members in 2013. The awards program is designed to assist HR professionals in meeting their professional development goals. Individuals may apply for a $2,000 education scholarship and/or a $750 certification scholarship.

Application Deadline: July 15, 2013

SHRM professional, general and associate members-- with a valid SHRM ID number-- pursuing a college degree or working toward PHR, SPHR, GPHR or California certification are eligible to apply. (SHRM student members and local-only members are not eligible for these awards.)

80 Certification scholarships of $750 each 

    • Individual SHRM members may apply for this $750 award to support their pursuit of professional certification. Funds may be used for any combination of test preparation-such as SHRM Learning System or certification preparation course- and exam fees.

20 Academic scholarships of $2,000 each

    • Individual SHRM members may apply for this $2,000 award to support their pursuit of a graduate or undergraduate college degree. Funds may be used for any combination of tuition, books or other course-related fees. Each scholarship is a one-time award; however previous applicants and past scholarship recipients are eligible to re-apply. Twenty academic scholarships are awarded annually.

Each SHRM domestic region has a total of $20,000 to distribute which means applicants compete only with others in their own area of the country. Each region will award 16 certification scholarships and 4academicscholarships for a total of 20 awards.

Every time I look around the Mobile SHRM meeting, I see a large amount of untapped expertise, dedication, and knowledge that could assist new and expanding businesses here in our area.  We know this area best when it comes to HR! We are subject matter experts.  It is us, that are out in this marketplace daily and we have a lot to offer new and existing business in our area to assist them locating here and in being successful here.  Are we as a group, interested in making a strategic, long term commitment to dedicate our collective resources to form and maintain a committee dedicated to being actively on the front of economic development in our area?  If so, please contact Kay Watson at president@mobilshrm.org or Jeanine Wilson at certification@mobileshrm.org.
