The Mobile SHRM Chapter Newsletter

From the President's Desk

Hello Mobile SHRM Members,

As my second year of my two-year term as President is starting to come to a close, I am drawn to look back on my time of service to this organization.  I remember the behind the scenes discussion and hard work it took to have our Chapter sponsor the first of many certification classes.  Which I believe was first held in 2006 and we have built into a continuous event assisting in the certification of quite a few certified professionals in our area.

I also remember the hard work and dedication on our main fund raiser, the annual Conference.  I fondly remember having conversations about building our brand and continuously building our annual Conference that occurs in November of each year.  Now, I think we have traced the history of this fundraiser back as far as 20 years!  Makes me so proud to be a part of this outstanding and dedicated group of volunteers building value for our Vendor partners and our Membership, simultaneously.

Well now I see those that have evolved into different times of life and different times of our professional lives.  Some having young families, who have now grown into adulthood and some caring for elders who now have passed on.  We have shared with each other both good times and bad.  We have gone from having to account for every moment of our work lives into a place of earned trust and have successfully educated our coworkers and teams into empowering them to make the right decisions, themselves!  We have truly evolved from the personnel department into the Human Resources Department!  We have had years with many volunteers and in some years, like this one, with vacancies on our board and Officers carrying off the role of 2 or more positions for Mobile SHRM.   We have evolved through good times and bad all the while still pulling off our annual half a day workshop (April’s Diversity program) together with our full day (now 11/2 days) Conference which is our main fundraiser for the year.

This year, we have had some lofty self-imposed deadlines like having the Conference information on the website April 1.  Unfortunately, that deadline has been postponed and is now expected to be on the website www.mobileshrm.org by the first part of next month.  So, please stay tuned for that exciting update and registration!

Also, this year we have put our certification class on a platform that allows us to open up certification live study classes to not just our members but to others, nationwide.  It seems to be so successful that we are offering an additional class.  Registration is now open for Mobile SHRM’s fully online fall 2019 SHRM-CP/SCP certification prep class.  Please see: https://mobileshrm.org/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=108 for complete details or to register you can also contact Mary White,  at mgwhite@mtibusiness.com for further details.

Please don’t forget our I Love Elvis and Tacos Networking Event on the Causeway.  This is a joint membership drive venture with Baldwin SHRM.  Join us June 6. 2019 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  Please invite someone to learn about our professional groups membership and have fun too!

I have been so fortunate to have had the privilege of rolling up my sleeves and working side by side with many of you.  I have learned so much from you and have had my life both personal and professional so enriched by your contributions and sweat equity to further our profession.  THANK YOU and thank you for your continued support.

See you at our next meeting at Heron Lakes!
