Each year, Mobile SHRM members select a deserving local charity to receive a donation at our annual holiday luncheon. Charities are selected based on member nominations and voting. Nominations are now being accepted, and you can suggest a charity any time between now and October 15.

If you’d like to nominate a charity for consideration, please email me (president@mobileshrm.org) with the following information:

  • Name of the charity
  • Contact person at the charity (name, phone number and email address)
  • A brief description (less than 100 words) of what the charity does (this will be placed on the ballot)

Nominations will be compiled on a ballot and voting will take place at the Gulf Coast Human Resource Conference on November 4.

Thank you in advance for your participation!

Mary White, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

Governmental Affairs

Update from Kay Watson, Governmental Affairs Director

During my Hill Visit last week, SHRM's list of topics to discuss only contained ONE item: the FLSA Overtime Exemption Rule. We met with members of Congress and Senators (AL), and
learned that calls and letters from Alabama constituents have been flooding in! Many companies as well as employees are dismayed by this ruling. Yet, the date of the increase (Dec 1st) is fast approaching! SHRM agrees that the threshold should be raised, but a 100% increase on Dec 1st is too much too fast.

Let Your Voice Be Heard!

Do you have a story? How will this rule impact you or your company? As your Advocate, I would like to collect specific examples from our area, and submit them to our AL Politicians. Please email your information to me at government@mobileshrm.org no later than October 21.

Mobile LibraryEmpower Teens

The Mobile Public Library in partnership with EYAPSE is hosting a Teen Job and Career Summit at the Mobile Public Library. We are targeting four different high schools in the area, and are planning for a total of two hundred participants over the course of the event.
The teens will visit the booths, participate in speed interviews, and be provided with feedback from the companies/businesses. The goal of the program is to familiarize teens with the interview process for job and college entry.

The event will be held November 2nd from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ben May Main Library. Local businesses who are interested in participating are invited to reserve one of our fifteen available booths between now and September 30th. Please contact Lucy Coleman at lcoleman@mplonline.org

Diversity Spotlight

Mobile SHRM Diversity and Inclusion Survey Results:

June 1, 2016 we sent out a D & I Climate Analysis survey to 141 members, 32 members responded. The Diversity Climate Analysis has a sample size of 22.69% of Mobile SHRM members. The complete results can be viewed here: https://www.mobileshrm.org/sites/default/files/Diversity%20Survey%20Results-MSHRM%20Newsletter.pdf
Based on the results these are recommendations for the fiscal year 2017 forward:

  • Offer chapter meetings and events outside normal business hours
  • Hold a Diversity mini conference in partnership with the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce
    • Offer a training topic on Understanding and Dealing with Biases
  • Conduct annual diversity and inclusion events for chapter members
    • Conduct chapter meetings on diversity specific to industries
  • Create a retirement/mentor membership
  • Integration program for new members
  • Continued partnership with the University of South Alabama School of Business Student SHRM Chapter
