Tom Hanks said, “there’s no crying in baseball”, but I haven’t heard anyone say “there’s no fun inHR”. Your 2013 board has been hard at work planning events that we hope you will find informative, beneficial, and yes, FUN.
In October, we will welcome EEOC Commissioner, Constance Barker. She’ll help us celebrate Diversity Awareness month by recognizing Spring Hill College for its decades of commitment to justice, equality and outreach efforts in many communities, both national and international. Don’t forget to make note of the date change to Thursday, October, 3.
In November, MSHRM will host the Gulf Coast Human Resource Conference. If you need credits to maintain your certification or interested in a particular topic, there’ll be something for everyone. We’ll also have our silent auction to benefit the SHRM Foundation.
As always, December will be a fun-filled luncheon with the HR games, and holiday treats for all attendees. Bring your holiday cheer and celebrate with your fellow MSHRM members.

A project of the Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council (SAWDC), the SAWDC Worlds of Opportunity is a hands-on career expo for 8th grade students in the eight counties of Southwest Alabama. The 3rd annual event held in September 2012 hosted 9,800 students, 1,000 teachers, counselors and parent chaperones, 600 volunteers, and 182 sponsors, partners and exhibitors. This year's event will be held on September 25th and 26th at the Mobile Civic Center.
The purpose of the event is to expose students to careers available locally and to demonstrate what each career involves through an interactive, engaging series of activities. The decision to target 8th grade students was a strategic one; eighth grade is a critical year for students as they are deciding on coursework pathways for the remainder of their high school years and beyond.
Twelve different industries are showcased in exhibits, called “Worlds.” The following industries will be featured:
The new Mobile SHRM website is finally replacing the outdated site this month with tons of upgrades and new user functions. Our new site will require ALL USERS to create a new user account even if you had one previously on the old site. This includes members, non-members, board members and any visitors registering online for an event or meeting.
The purposes for the new account creations is to combine both the user features of the website (meeting signup, newsletter, etc.) and the administration features of member tracking (member renewals, notification, applications, etc.). In the past these features were on separate websites and required separate accounts…we have finally combined them.
Unfortunately for security reasons ALL USERS will need to create a new account. Yes, it can be the same as you used in the past because it’s a completely new system. Your new account will track your membership renewals, invoices, meetings attended and other account information for you all in one place with one login.
Once you have created your new account we will cross reference your new account to your membership status and then assign you the correct permissions to the site.
The complete migration to the new site will take a couple of weeks and will be ongoing with some tweaks happening daily. Feel free to create your NEW ACCOUNT at ANYTIME by going to the login block at www.mobileshrm.org and selecting the “Create New Account”.
We apologize for any convenience the migration might cause in the next few weeks but the new website will help us serve our chapter members and sponsors more effectively.
