From The President's Desk

With so many changes going on in a variety of areas that affect human resources, trying to keep up with all of them can be daunting. That is why Mobile SHRM strives to provide professional development opportunities for you throughout the year. Our annual “Mini Conference” held at the University of South Alabama is a good example of one of those opportunities. Two of our speakers provided a great half day seminar on recruiting. Our own Marjorie Icenogle provided a session for individuals who may have the responsibility for administering human resources in their company without the benefit of any formal training. I was surprised to find that several people who attended her session were HR professionals working as specialists and wanted to learn more about other areas of HR. All of the feedback we received on the sessions was very positive and participants also raved about the great food!

We still have several opportunities for professional development this year. Our next major event will be our annual Gulf Coast Human Resource Conference, “A New Beginning for HR Professionals”. This is a great (and inexpensive way) to earn 6.0 SHRM and HRCI recertification credits or just learn more about HR. Our goal is also to make the day entertaining with our speakers really embracing our Friday the 13th theme. The agenda for the conference will be on our website very soon. Why not save a little money and register today?

Please join us at the Mobile Marriott for our September monthly meeting. This is a great opportunity to bring your front line supervisors to hear Dr. Shearer provide insight into their role in managing their direct reports. We are also looking forward to trying this new venue and would like your feedback after the event.

Hope to see you there!

SHRM Certification Deadline Reminder
By:  Jeanine Wilson, SPHR, SHRM-SCP
       MSHRM Certification Director

Dates Set for 2016 SHRM-CP/SCP Prep Class

Mobile SHRM will continue to offer a SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification preparation class in conjunction with MTI Business Solutions one time each year. The next class is scheduled to begin in January, 2016.

  • Classes will meet on Monday evenings from January 25 through May 16 at the MTI Business Solutions Training Center (1110 Montlimar Drive, Suite 570) in Mobile.
  • There will be four "off" nights during the session (Mardi Gras and spring break for Mobile and Baldwin counties) for a total of 13 class sessions.
  • Enrollment will be limited to 13 participants.
  • Registration will open as soon as we receive confirmation from SHRM regarding the cost of the 2016 SHRM Learning System, as that information is required to set the class price. We expect to have that information by early October.
  • Watch the MSRHM website newsletter and website for class details.

Please contact Mary White, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, at success@mtibusiness.com with any class questions.

Have you taken the tutorial to obtain your SHRM CP or SCP?  If you already have your HRCI PHR, GPHR or SPHR certification (must be in good standing and obtained your certification before 1/31/2015), you should be able to obtain your corresponding SHRM Certification by taking the tutorial at http://www.shrm.org/certification/pathway/pages/default.aspx.   The deadline is December 31, 2015.

If you miss the December 31, 2015 deadline and want to obtain the SHRM-CP/SCP certification you will still be able to do so by passing the exam.  So, it might be worth the reported 30-45 minutes it takes to take the tutorial.  Please note that as it stands currently, there is not a fee to obtain the SHRM-CP/SCP via tutorial.  Please contact certification@mobileshrm.org for more information or http://www.shrm.org/certification/pages/default.aspx.
